In the fall of 1943, Disney artist Hank Porter created two mascots for the McClatchy newspaper and radio chain. The September 4th, 1943 front-page headline in The Sacramento Bee, The Fresno Bee, and The Modesto Bee newspapers declared: "Two Busy Bees, Straignt Fom Pen of Walt Disney Make Appearance."
The two bees in question were Scoopy and Gabby. Scoopy became the mascot of the McClatchy's three newspapers, while Gabby became the mascot of the family's five radio stations.
Disney had Porter create the mascots in return for a $1,500 donation by the McClatchy's to the Army Relief Fund.
